Germany’s capacity to work from home

We propose an index of working from home (WFH) capacity for the German economy, drawing on rich survey and administrative data. find that 56 percent jobs are WFH feasible, most which located in urban areas highly digitized industries. Using individual-level data tasks work conditions, we show heterogeneity feasibility is largely explained by differences task content. feasible typically characterized cognitive, non-manual tasks, PC usage. compare our survey-based measure with popular task-based measures capacity, usually rely determining incompatible WFH, approaches capture variation across occupations fairly accurately. A simple use intensity will generally constitute a suitable proxy capacity. Finally, demonstrate strong predictor actual outcomes during Covid-19 crisis discuss applications context pandemic future work.
